Author Interview + Giveaway - Out of Turn by Tiffany Snow

I'd like to wish a warm welcome to author Tiffany Snow.  I feel very privileged to host today's blog stop for Tiffany,  as I am a fan, rather than a book reviewer.  Tiffany is currently promoting her latest release - Out Of Turn.

About Tiffany
I love to write and am thrilled to be a part of the Amazon Montlake family. My debut novel, NO TURNING BACK, is the first book in The Kathleen Turner Series. I write about things I love to read myself - a heroine who could be a neighbor or best friend; two men who each portray their own version of darkness and light, each vying for her affection; and a story that focuses as much on the characters as it does the suspense. NO TURNING BACK, TURN TO ME, and TURNING POINT currently comprise The Kathleen Turner Series. The fourth book, OUT OF TURN, will be released 12/17/13. There will be a total of five books in the Kathleen Turner Series.
As for me, I've been reading romance novels since I was way too young to read such things, have an unhealthy obsession for all things Doctor Who, prefer Pepsi to Coke and Absolut to both, think men who drink girly cocktails are wusses, have learned to never stop believing in my beloved St. Louis Cardinals, and can recite the entire scripts of When Harry Met Sally and Apollo 13. George Washington is cool, Bon Jovi still rocks the house, and Bruce Willis is the ultimate alpha-male hero. Most of all, romance never, ever gets old.

Interview

Why did you choose Indianapolis as the setting for The Kathleen Turner Series?
I’m born and raised in the Midwest and wanted that to be the setting for this series.  Indianapolis is the quintessential Midwest city, in my opinion.  I love it there and visit a couple of times a year.  It has the four distinct seasons, which I also wanted to incorporate into the books.  NO TURNING BACK begins in the chilly autumn, TURN TO ME continues with the beginning of winter into Christmas, TURNING POINT is late winter/early spring and OUT OF TURN is the heat of summertime in Indy.

Are there any characters you've written that you just don't like in series?
There are always villains, those characters you love to hate.  I don’t have a character that I don’t like, but I will say that I have a soft spot for Kandi.  A spoiled little rich girl who wants no one’s pity, she fell in love with the wrong man and couldn’t ever move past that.  She’s a sad character at her heart.

Now that you've finished writing the final book in the series - Point of No Return,  is this the end of Kathleen, Blane and Kade once this book is published on May 20th '14, or will they come back and visit occasionally?
You might see them pop up now and again in other books, a little wink and wave to readers of the series.

There is a long standing radio show in UK called Desert Island Discs.  What choices would you make, if you were stranded on a desert Island?

a) Eight pieces of music? : Oh my, this is hard.  I’m stuck in the 80s so I’d have to have some Bon Jovi tunes (It's My Life, Bed of Roses, Bounce, Superman Tonight), a couple of Maroon 5 tunes (Wake Up CallHarder to Breathe), Kiss Me by Ed Sheeran, a recording of Carrie Underwood’s live performance of How Great Thou Art http://youtu.be/pLLMzr3PFgk and One Day More from Les Miserables as performed by the original Broadway cast.
b)  One book? ( + Complete Works of Shakespeare + Bible or other Religious/philosophical work).  A book I’ve read over and over and which helped me learn to love first-person storytelling, DEAD UNTIL DARK by Charlaine Harris.
c) One luxury item?   A bottle of Absolut Mandarin.

What next for Tiffany Snow? Any clues or hints about your next book/series/trilogy?
I am looking at writing a trilogy, but mum’s the word for now.  I will say that it will not include a love triangle. ;-)

excerpt
Kade leaned closer and his fingers lightly brushed my chin, lifting my head, and his lips met mine.
The touch was electric, as though a shock had gone through me, and I didn’t move, afraid that if I did, he’d stop. His mouth moved gently over mine, his touch maddeningly slow as he lightly licked and sucked on my lips. His tongue was soft, warm velvet.
Only his fingers under my jaw and his lips touched me.
The scent of the cologne he’d worn tonight drifted to me, its alluring aroma mixed with his own scent, creating an aphrodisiac that, combined with his kiss, had me clenching my hands into fists to keep from touching him.
When he lifted his head, his eyes finally met mine, their brilliant blue intense beneath long, dark lashes. His face was inches away and it took every ounce of willpower I had to not pull him back for a real kiss.
“Chocolate tastes even better on you,” he murmured.
My breath was shallow and quick, my pulse even more so. The effect Kade had on me was so profound and strong, and something I’d fought for so long. It seemed odd to think that I didn’t have to anymore.
Or did I?
I’d been with Blane, engaged to him, still had feelings for him that couldn’t be flipped off like a light switch, no matter how angry and bitter I was over how it had ended.
Where did that leave anything I might feel for Kade?
I felt confused and unsure and excused myself to go to the ladies’ room. I touched up my makeup, reapplied my lip gloss, and tried to regain the peace of mind I’d had earlier.
Kade had kissed me before. It didn’t have to mean anything more now than it had then. I was reading too much into it. Maybe because I was lonely, and hurting, and my ego could certainly use some stroking from a man like Kade.
I decided I wasn’t going to allow myself to ruin the night. I’d been having a good time and getting lost inside my own confusion hadn’t been part of the plan. I’d go back to Kade and just have fun doing whatever he had planned. I’d worry about my state of mind, and my life, later.
Kade had paid the bill by the time I returned, and when he ushered me outside it was into a waiting limousine.
“What’s the occasion?” I asked, as he slid in after me.
“To see the Strip, of course,” he said, moving to the seat across from the wet bar. “Champagne?”
I grinned, delighted at this turn of events. “Absolutely.” Sip champagne while riding up and down the Vegas Strip in a limo with a gorgeous man? Yes, please.
Kade popped the cork and poured two glasses. “What should we toast to?” I asked as he handed me a flute of the golden liquid. “To the future? New beginnings? World peace?”
Kade smirked at my teasing. “How about to how incredibly sexy you look tonight?”
That made me feel as though I’d swallowed a ray of sunshine and its warm glow was spreading through my body, melting me from the inside out.
I clinked my glass against his. “Ditto,” I said, and drank.

Rugelach aka Kade's Mom's Christmas Cookies

I love baking/cooking, and one thing I like to do is try recipes/dishes that are connected or mentioned in the books that I read.
After reading the latest book in The Kathleen Turner series - Out of Turn, and nursing a major book hangover, it was a perfect time to do a bit of festive baking.
This particular recipe was mentioned as part of a blog hop promotion for Tiffany A.Snow about a year ago.  It was accompanied by this extra scene about Kade.

Extract :  “She used to make these cookies for me, every Christmas.”  Absently, Kade took another drink, lost in memories.  “We never had much money for presents, but she’d scrimp and somehow I’d have a full stocking.  Then we’d have Christmas dinner, and always these cookies afterword.  They were amazing.  Fruit and cranberries with nuts, rolled in cinnamon and sugar.  They used to just melt in your mouth.”

 RECIPE
8oz / 225g Cream Cheese, room temperature
2 stick / 225g Unsalted Butter, room temperature
¼ cup Sugar
1tsp Vanilla Extract
2 cups flour
¼ cup Light Brown Sugar, packed
2tsp Cinnamon
¼ cup Dried Cranberries
1 cup Walnuts, finely chopped*
1 jar Apricot Preserve
1 Egg, beaten for egg wash

Mix cream cheese and butter together. Add sugar, vanilla extract and flour. This makes the dough/pastry. Separate the dough into four equal parts, shape each into a disc, wrap in plastic and refrigerate for at least one hour. When ready, roll each disk out on a floured surface to about 9″ /23cm circles.
Puree apricot preserve if chunky. Combine the dried cranberries, brown sugar, cinnamon and walnuts. Spread a thin layer of preserve on the dough, then divide the filling equally and sprinkle over each circle, lightly pressing it into the dough. With a pizza cutter, cut each dough circle into 12 equal wedges. Starting from the outside, roll up each wedge into a crescent. Chill for 15 minutes, then brush each cookie with egg wash and sprinkle with a mixture of cinnamon and sugar. Bake for 15 minutes at 350°F / 180°C / gas mark 4 until lightly browned.
* I used 1 Cup Ground Almonds

My son Oskar loves these and keeps sneaking into the storage box and taking one!  A tasty Christmas treat that is now part of my family's Christmas tradition.  God Jul and Merry Christmas.

Looking for the "Perfect" Christmas Tree.

We had a little trip into the forest on Saturday looking for a Christmas Tree.  We are usually looking for something with a max. height of 3.25m / 10ft.

We headed off just after lunch with a flask of cocoa, clementines and biscuits, as well the essential tools -ax and saw.  Due to the fact that the weather forecast had been wrong the previous night ( we had rain instead of snow ) :-O, the track was slippery so we couldn't take a trailer with us.  Also, we only have one 4WD car, so contigency plans were made and it was arranged that Nils' father would drive up and pick me, Oskar and his friend up, whilst Nils would drive back with the Christmas tree, once it had been found and chopped down.

When we stopped and got out of the car, it seemed that we'd come to the wrong place...nothing looked "worthy".  So we decided to let Oskar and his friend do a bit of sledging before heading for another location.  Athough it was only early afternoon, the sun was barely above the horizon and the air was decidedly chilly.
The rain that had fallen the previously night had frozen in the trees, so any slight breeze sent hail like drops from the trees.

We'd just about decided to give-up our search and have the cocoa etc, when Nils spotted "our" tree and then we saw another!  Decisions, decisions!  Actually, it didn't take too long to decide because by now my Father-in-Law had turned up and the boys were devastated to find out I'd forgotten to bring cups for the cocoa :-0  We were all ready to head back as quickly as possible.
Boys with toys: Nils with an ax, Oskar with the saw.
Now the job was done, we headed back home to the warm house...the warm cocoa was perfect :-)
This is how our Christmas 2013 tree looks :-)

What are you doing tomorrow? The Countdown is Nearly Over.

Firstly, I'll be waiting patiently for my kindle app on the iPad to update. ( hopefully by 9am CET ) Tomorrow is the publication date for the 4th book in The Kathleen Turner Series by Tiffany A. Snow - Out of Turn.  Secondly, I plan on reading the book...all 473 pages until it is finished!  Lastly, if there is time, I will be chatting, discussing the book and determining whether I will remain firmly planted in Team Blane or move to the darker side, Team Kade!

ExcerptThe door suddenly swung open and Blane walked in, carrying a paper bag. He stopped short, taking in Kade and me sitting together on the couch.
Kade was on his feet immediately, his stance protectively shielding me. If I’d thought the heat in my apartment had made it hard to breathe, that was nothing compared to how it felt now.
“Long time no see, brother,” Kade said, but his voice held no warmth, only warning.
“I didn’t know you were in town,” Blane replied, the hint of a question in his careful tone.
“Did my secretary forget to e-mail you my schedule? So sorry about that.”
Kade’s sneering flippancy made me wince. I should do something to help fix this. I was the problem between them. I got to my feet and stepped to the side of Kade so I could see Blane.
“I called him,” I said bluntly, thinking fast. “Because of . . . Gage. Thought he might be able to help.” No need for either of them to know I’d called Kade because I’d wanted to get rid of Blane.
“She says Gage is trying to kill her,” Kade said. “Is this true?”
“I don’t have any proof, but yeah,” Blane said.
“And you’re the one who’s supposed to be protecting her?” Kade said dubiously. “Which is why she got hit by a fucking car, right?”
Blane’s jaw locked tight at that and I flinched. He didn’t reply.
“You know,” Kade continued, taking a couple of steps toward Blane, “it seems to me that she might be safer with you not around. Seeing as how you’re doing such a bang-up job and all.” His thin-lipped smile would have made an alligator seem friendly by comparison.
I wanted to cry at how Kade was talking to Blane, his voice full of anger and contempt. I’d never heard him speak to Blane like that. He’d always been . . . not exactly deferential, but even his ingrained sarcasm had been tempered out of respect for Blane.
“It wasn’t his fault,” I interrupted, resting my hand on Kade’s arm. “He told me. I ran off without thinking, which was stupid. Blane’s not to blame.”
Both men were looking at me now and I swallowed, shifting my weight nervously. Blane’s gaze moved from mine to where I was touching Kade. I dropped my hand.
“I got your medicine,” Blane said, ignoring Kade and setting a bag down on the table. “And something for you to eat. Kung pao. Your favorite.”
“Thanks.” I didn’t know what else to say.
“Someone has to stay with you,” he said. “It’s not safe for you to be alone right now.”
The already thick tension in the room increased tenfold at Blane’s pronouncement. I couldn’t imagine Blane staying here with me. I couldn’t handle that.
“You’re not staying,” I said firmly. “I understand that you want to help, but that’s just not going to happen.”
“Kat, this is serious. He’s already tried twice in as many days. God knows who he hired. He knows more criminals than any defense lawyer in town, and that’s saying something.”
“She said no.” Kade’s voice was silk-covered steel.
Blane’s attention turned to Kade. “You’re going to stay? Watch out for her?”
Kade gave a careless shrug. “If she wants me to. I don’t treat her like a misbehaving toddler, unlike some people. It’s her decision as to whether she wants protection.” He raised a wickedly arched brow. “Unless you think we’ll be too busy fucking?”
That statement went off with the force of a bomb and I drew a sharp breath, sure that they were going to attack each other, but Blane didn’t take the bait.
“I was wrong,” Blane said quietly. “I was wrong to not trust you and wrong to not trust Kathleen. And I’ve paid for that mistake in more ways than you could possibly imagine.”
“Well, maybe you’ve paid enough for you, but I don’t know if you’ve paid enough for her.” This time there was no mistaking the cold menace in Kade’s tone.
Teasers / Snippets

Snippet 1 – A moment later, Kade handed me a vodka tonic. I took a drink, covertly eyeing him. He looked . . . mouthwatering was the word that immediately came to mind. Expensive black slacks were paired with a black silk shirt that had one more button undone than what most men would have attempted—but most men weren’t Kade Dennon. A look that would seem silly on another man looked sexy as sin on Kade.
The skin of his neck and part of his chest was bared by the open V of the shirt and begged to be touched. His square jaw was smooth and freshly shaven. His black hair curled slightly over his collar, a thick lock falling over his forehead. Just looking at him made the breath catch in my chest.
 Snippet 2 – “Kat . . . ” Blane said.
I tore my gaze from the dead guy.
“Are you sure?” he asked. “Are you going . . . with him?”
I glanced at Kade but couldn’t read anything  from his face. I couldn’t tell if he wanted me to say yes, no, or didn’t care one way or the other.
Snippet 3 – “Saved by Barney Fife?” he asked. I let his nickname for Chance pass. Blane, Kade, and Chance were never going to get along, much less like each other, and that was that.
“He’s going to come by and take me to lunch,” I said. “I probably should get some studying done before he comes. I have a couple of finals next week.” I glanced nervously at Kade, hoping he’d let what we’d been talking about drop.
Snippet 4 – Without even looking at him, Blane handed his glass to Kade, who took it without question, then Blane was folding me into his arms.
He pulled me so close and so tight, I felt my trepidation ease away like I was sloughing off an old, heavy coat.
I heard the door behind me close softly, and knew that Kade had left us alone.
Snippet 5 – My teeth chattered and I kicked off my sodden shoes and socks, pulling my knees to my chest so my feet rested on the seat. Kade turned on the heat and soon my chills subsided. I held my icy hands in front of the vent.
“This kills me to do this to your car,” I said. “Water and leather don’t mix.”
“You worry too much,” he said.
“Aren’t you freezing?” I asked. He had to be. Jeans were a bitch when they got wet.
“I’ll admit to some chafing in areas that I prefer to be treated more gently,” he said, making me laugh.
Snippet 6 -  Blane’s lips twitched like he was thinking about smiling. “That’s not jealousy I hear in your voice, is it?”
“Of course not—don’t be ridiculous,” I sputtered, trying to tug my hand from his, but he held on, inching closer to me until I had to tip my head back to look him in the eye.
“Because if you were jealous, that would mean I still have a shot.” His voice was a gentle rasp that seemed to run right through me.
 Snippet 7 -  “Hit me.”
My eyes fluttered open again. “What?” Surely I’d misheard him.
“My target. He’s been keeping an eye on you. The bruises gave me an idea. So in a moment, slap me as hard as you can.” Kade’s words spoken in my ear made me swallow hard.
“I don’t want to hit you,” I said. “I . . . can’t.”
“You’ve done it before.”
The reminder made me wince.
Snippet 8 – I pulled back from Blane, but he didn’t let me get far; his arm stayed locked around my waist, anchoring me to his side.
Kade handed Blane a pair of sunglasses. “Ready?”
Blane gave a curt nod. “You take that side,” he said, sliding the glasses on.
Kade moved to my other side so that they flanked me. Charlotte led the way as we went out the doors.
Snipped 9 – “Looks like she won’t have much choice, seeing as how you threw her out of your life and, just to add insult to injury, took her main source of income with you,” Kade shot back.
“What, you didn’t swoop in and save the day?” Blane sneered, leaning slightly over the table. “Didn’t buy her another expensive car or leave twenty grand on her table again?”
Okay, news flash—I didn’t realize Blane knew about that.
Snippet 10 – “Well, he looked like a barrel of laughs, so I’m sure you had a great time,” Kade teased. “And how thoughtful of him to get you home so early.”
“He had to work tomorrow,” I said, making up an excuse for my short date. I really didn’t want Blane and Kade to know how boring Luke had been.
“I see,” Kade said. “And what did he do for a living?”
Shit. “Um . . . something with numbers?”
Blane snorted a laugh at me.
“I wasn’t paying a whole lot of attention, okay?” I protested. “He talked a lot.”
Snippet 11 - “Seriously. That outfit never gets old.” Kade’s appreciative once-over had me glaring at him, even though a dozen or more men would probably do the same thing to me tonight as they checked out my “holiday” uniform.
Blane’s expression wasn’t disapproving. I couldn’t read what it was, exactly, but his gaze lingered on my thighs, bare midriff, and breasts before our eyes met.
“I’m going to take you to work,” he said.
I was quick to protest. “That’s not necessary.” Just thinking about being locked in a confined space with only me and Blane, no one else for a buffer, had my nerves on edge.
Snippet 12 – “Do you have any idea what it’s doing to me, seeing you in my bed?” he hissed.
Kade’s anger both frightened and thrilled me. His face was inches away, his eyes boring into mine. I couldn’t blink, could barely breathe. I gave a tiny shake of my head.
“I’ve fantasized about this,” he said. “It’s taking everything I have not to rip your clothes off and make love to you, injured or not.”
His words sent a bolt of heat through me, his body so close to mine that my chest brushed his when I breathed. My gaze dropped to his mouth and I licked my lips, remembering what it had been like when he’d kissed me before. His hold on my wrists tightened almost to the point of pain. My breath came faster and my pulse pounded.
Our eyes locked, the unholy fire burning in his making the blood pound in my veins. “So what’s stopping you?”
Snippet 13 – He stood, moving closer until he towered over me. I swallowed, memories threatening to overwhelm me. Given the path the conversation had suddenly taken, I wondered if Blane bringing me into his bedroom had been intentional, if he knew exactly how much standing inches from where we’d first made love would affect me.
“Give me something, Kat,” he rasped. “Please. Just tell me if you still love me.”
His gray eyes held me captive and I couldn’t look away, their depths filled with pain and sorrow. Another woman might have been glad to see Blane hurting. He’d hurt me, after all. But I couldn’t stand it, so I told him the truth.
“I wouldn’t be here if I didn’t.”
Snippet 14Sirens screamed in the distance. Thank God. They were on their way. My hands were slick with his blood as I struggled to keep any semblance of composure and not fall into hysterics. I didn’t want to break down, not yet, though tears poured down my face. I swallowed down a sob.
He blinked, his eyes slow to reopen. Blood had begun to seep from his nose and mouth as he breathed, a bubbly red-tinted foam. The sight of it sent my panic ratcheting even higher.

Santa Lucia & Lussekatter

Lussekatter

Today is Santa Lucia, which is celebrated throughout Scandinavia.  It is one of the very few saints days observed in this part of Northern Europe.  Celebrations are usually kept to barnehager (kindergarten/Nursery) and schools and rarely observed at home.  Nils and I watched the Santa Lucia procession (tog) when Oskar was at barnehage.  The first time he cried his eyes out and Nils had to carry him around in the train/tog.  One year we managed to get him dressed in the traditional white long gown and he sang his way alone, holding a candle - result!  Today at school, where Oskar is 2nd year pupil, there will be a procession.

As with any good feast, there is a something tasty to accompany it - Lussekatter.  I used this recipe (Norwegian) to make the ones pictured above.  I looked on the internet to find an equivalent recipe in English, but it looks like everyone has their own "best" way to make them.  The ones I made include cardamom.  Recipes I found from USA/Australia didn't include this.  Also, some use Quark/Kesam/Kvarg and egg....my recipe didn't include either ingredient.  Whilst there is absolutely nothing wrong with the ones I made, next year, I think I'll try a different recipe to compare.

The Kathleen Turner Series Book Blitz & Giveaway Day 4

Today we begin profiling each of the books that have been published so far in the series, starting with book one - No Turning Back

Kathleen Turner has goals. She moved to Indianapolis to start seeing to them, but things aren’t going quite as well as she’d hoped. She’s a runner for a high-powered law firm in town, not the most prestigious of positions, but it and her part-time bartender gig at least pays the bills. And one of the senior partners is a dreamboat in that obscenely rich, disturbingly good looking, slightly snobbish sort of way.
Before she did a mortifying face plant in his lap during a meeting, she was quite happy ogling him from afar. After that…well…she was more about the avoiding. Mature, no. More likely to assure she keeps her job, yes.
She’s made some friends in the few months she’s been in Indy. One of those friends is her neighbor Sheila, though Kathleen can’t say she’s completely comfortable with Sheila’s job choice as a high-dollar escort.
It’s the middle of the night when Kathleen hears fighting coming from Sheila’s apartment. As disturbing as that is, it’s the ominous sound of silence afterwards that keeps Kathleen from falling back to sleep. Slipping from bed with the intention of making sure everything is okay, Kathleen knocks on friend’s door, only to find Sheila murdered, her naked body sprawled on sheets stained crimson with her blood.
Shock and horror are followed by gritty determination when it becomes clear that Sheila’s death isn’t random and it isn’t the result of a jealous boyfriend. It’s the opening gambit in a web of murder, deceit, conspiracy, and fraud that stretches to the law firm for which Kathleen works. Maybe to the very office that Blane Kirk commands.
And Kathleen Turner, law office runner, can trust no one if she wants to survive.

The Kathleen Turner Book Blitz and Giveaway Day 3

It is Kade's profile today:

Kade Dennon
Danger is the aura surrounding Kade Dennon, an ex-FBI agent turned assassin and cyber-hacker, despite having the looks of a fallen angel with piercing blue eyes, inky black hair, and a smirk that beckons too many to their doom.  Painful lessons from a harsh past have taught Kade to trust no one and care about no one – except his older brother, Blane Kirk.
Living life on the edge never bothered Kade, until he met Kathleen.  His brother’s girlfriend holds too much temptation for a man who’s never met a line he didn’t cross.  He owes Blane his life – he’d die first before betraying him.  But his love for Kathleen will prove to be the ultimate test of his loyalty to his brother.

Out of Turn, the 4th book in the series is published 17th December.  Turn on a Dime - Kade's Turn will be available in Spring '14

The Author - Tiffany A. Snow

I love to write and am thrilled to be part of the Amazon Montlake family.  My debut novel, NO TURNING BACK, is the first book in The Kathleen Turner Series.   I write about things I like to read myself - a heroine who could be a neighbour or best friend; Two men who each portray their own version of darkness and light, each vying for her affection; and a story that focuses as much on the characters as it does on the suspense.  NO TURNING BACK, TURN TO ME and TURNING POINTcurrently comprise The Kathleen Turner Series.
As for me, I've been reading romance novels since I was way too young to read such things, have an unhealthy obsession with Dr.Who, prefer Pepsi to Coke and Absolut to both, think men who drink girly cocktails are wusses, have never learned to stop loving my beloved St. Louis Cardinals and can recite the entire scripts of When Harry Met Sally and Apollo 13.  George Washington is cool, Bon Jovi still rocks the house and Bruce Willis is the ultimate alpha-male hero.  Most of all, romance never, ever gets old.

Born to a family of wealth and privilege, Blane Kirk is the embodiment of a women's fantasy.  Born with eyes that range from stormy grey to emerald, he is well over six feet of male perfection.  A Navy SEAL turned high-powered attorney on the fast track to a political career, Blane doesn't let anything or anyone stand in his way.  Women are a useful accessory, changed and discarded as easily and as often he changes his ties.
There is only one person to whom Blane holds unswerving loyalty - his half-brother, Kade Dennon.  Too late to save Kade from a tormented childhood, Blane carries his guilt, determined to never let Kade down again.

Out of Turn, the 4th book in the series is published on 17th December.  Blane also has his own companion book Turn on a Dime - Blane's Turn
